Your custody arrangements or parenting plan determines when you get to see your children and exactly what role you play in their daily lives.

However careful you were when you originally created the plan, there may come a point when you need to change your custody order. The three situations below are all scenarios in which a North Carolina parent could potentially modify an existing custody order.

After a change to their career

Maybe you just accepted a job with a completely different work shift than you have had for the past few years. Maybe you started your own company so that you can have a flexible schedule and can more easily be there when your children need you.

When your work schedule or obligations change, that may be a significant enough change in your circumstances to warrant a modification to your custody order, especially if you will be available for more time with the children.

When your children’s schedules change

A kindergartener will spend fewer hours in class than a middle schooler will, and school obligations aren’t the only thing that changes as kids grow. They are likely to join activities, sports or clubs that take them away from home on the weekends and consume many of their afternoons and evenings. When those schedule starts to impact your parenting time, you may need to modify the custody arrangements to reflect your new schedules.

When you have reason to worry for your children’s safety

If your ex has started to act unstable or your children have complained about not having food in the house or inappropriate physical discipline, you may need to ask the court to change the custody order for the protection of the children.

Thinking about how your situation has changed can help you determine if a custody modification is warranted.
