Planning for a post-divorce move with children

Going through a divorce is a traumatic time for some people, but it can also be a fresh start. Some individuals opt to move after the split. There are some points that you have to consider if you’re planning this type of move and have children.

One of the most important things that you need to do is find out if you’re legally able to move to the location you’re considering. Some child custody orders have geographical restrictions. This means that you’ll be able to move within the local area but can’t go too far. Regardless of where you’re moving, there are ways you can help your children.

Prepare the kids for the move

You need to let the children know about the move. Talk to them about what’s going to happen leading up to it. Discuss how things might change. If it’s a local move, there might not be a significant difference, but they still need time to adjust to the idea of moving.

Leaving their friends behind can be a daunting prospect for children. You need to think about how you’ll address those concerns as a parent. Remember, don’t make any promises that you can’t keep.

Understand the child custody terms

Ensure you understand the child custody arrangements so you can comply with them. You and your ex should work as a parenting team to create a schedule and terms that are in the best interest of the children. Try not to think too far into the future when you’re negotiating the terms. Instead, set everything up for what they need now. Modifying the terms in the future is possible.
