Don’t eat these foods behind the wheel

Distracted driving causes car accidents every day. A lot of them are caused by cellphone use, but not all of them. It’s important to know what other types of distractions there are so that you can avoid them.

One common distraction is when people choose to eat or drink behind the wheel. Here are a few things that you want to avoid whenever possible.

Sloppy fast food meals

Fast food may be one of the easiest options when you’re on a road trip, but greasy food can be difficult to eat in the car. It can also make your hands slip off of the wheel. These are best to be avoided.

A cup of coffee

It’s also incredibly common for people to drink coffee in the car. But you need to realize that this is also something of a risk. Not only does reaching for your cup of coffee distract you as you take that drink, but spilling the coffee could be painful and cause you to lose control of the vehicle.

Anything that can spill

Similarly, it can be a major problem when people eat any type of food that can spill. You can even find accounts of people eating things like soup or chili in the car. If that spill happens, odds are high that the driver is going to react instinctively and let go of the wheel of the car. You may think you’re eating safely, but all it takes is a split second for an accident to happen.

Even if you decide not to eat in the car, you still have to share the road with other distracted drivers who may be doing so. If one of them makes a mistake and causes an accident, you need to know how to seek financial compensation.
