North Carolina ranks 19th in national divorce rates

How many people do you know who have gotten divorced? Are you thinking about getting a divorce yourself? During this process, you may have wondered where your state ranks in terms of divorce rate in the United States.

One study put North Carolina at 19th in the country. It was tied for that spot with New Hampshire, Missouri and Montana. All of those states saw about 3.1 divorce cases for every 1,000 residents.

Sorting it by every 1,000 residents makes it easier to compare states to one another. Clearly, North Carolina sees far more actual divorces in any given year than Montana, but that is because North Carolina has a population of almost 10.5 million and ranks as the 9th-most populated state in the country. Montana has just over 1 million people and is the second-least populated state. So, while there are fewer divorces in Montana, the rate is still in the top half in the country.

These divorces happen for many different reasons. Couples face high debt levels and a lot of financial stress. Others discover that they got married too early and they grow apart over time. Some get involved in relationships outside of their marriage and then decide to get divorced to pursue the new relationship (or because their spouse finds out what has been going on).

Regardless of the reason that you are getting divorced, though, the key is to make sure you are well aware of all of your legal rights. This can be a complex process and it may have a drastic impact on the rest of your life, so you need to know where you stand.
